CFD Thermal Modeling of Data Centers

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is not a new science; many industries use this technology in their design processes. CFD analysis in Data Centers, however, is a fairly recent phenomenon. In today’s modern high-density Data Centers airflow takes on new importance. The ability to cool high-density racks (and do it in the most efficient manner) requires proper Data Center airflow design.

In the most basic terms, the keys to efficient high-density computer room cooling are supplying enough cooling air to the racks, maintaining separation of supply and return air, and insuring the highest possible CRAC return temperatures. By employing CFD modeling, rapid prototyping of various configurations and solutions can uncover the optimum design or pinpoint the cause of current issues without expensive trial and error. Properly designed airflow can reduce Data Center cooling costs by 30% or more, or allow higher server density.
