The Modern Data Center
Data Centers are the lifeblood of today’s business — regardless of the industry served. Without 24xForever computing, business simply cannot function. One study estimates the cost of an hour of downtime for a large financial organization at $20M+. Another study shows that many businesses that experience a serious disruption in IT services are materially damaged or worse. Simply put, downtime is unacceptable! The most visible manifestation is the existence of disaster recovery sites for many organizations including most Fortune 1000 companies. Today, however, advances in computing technology are straining Data Center power and cooling infrastructures beyond what was envisioned as little as three years ago. Racks that once averaged 2 kilowatts (kW) are now averaging 5-10 kW, and the trend continues. Virtualization is one interim solution to today’s problem, but the power and cooling issues will continue to grow beyond the capacity of virtualization to solve the problem alone. Another solution new to the market is power-managed servers, which will reduce power and cooling loads but present new challenges to cooling systems which were designed to manage relatively slow changing thermal loads. Room-Scale Intelligent Cooling (RSIC) addresses the challenges of the ever changing Data Center by dynamically managing the available cooling resources in real time, saving energy and adding capacity.
